We have just returned from Russia, which seems to be a natural close to this summer’s adventures. We took our visuals to the deep country fields and forests of Raminhutte, a gorgeous secret place at the border of Lithuania. With healthy doses of Pentacrene and the hospitality of our good friend Victor, it was a MadFlat Reunion where we played all night in a rustic nightclub in the middle of nowhere and under the stars.

After an amazing time in the forests and more exploring, we unloaded our gear into Platinum, one of Kaliningrad’s popular nightclubs for the White Party. With everyone glowing violet under the black lights, this was a fun time.

This is the 1st performance of this piece, one of two channels, perfomed at Forward Motin Theater’s EyeWash series. We worked with this piece throughout 2008 in different settings. Please get in touch if you would like to view the full versions.

This is a dedicated space for writing about any VJ shows and performances we have seen by other VJs and video artists, as well as anything else interesting that may be related to the art and craft of the VJ.  As we are not exactly writers, nor are we critics, we have opened up this space in order to pass on visual experiences to readers who were not there but may be interested in what went on.  Please write and contribute to the dialogue!

Using cut-out bin vinyl samples and urban nature video, Lady Firefly (Zarah Cabañas) and Paul Amitai take the familiar and transform it into something unexpected and sublime. With the typical tools of live VJ/DJ performance (laptop, turntables, CDJs, effects), the duo finds a way to spin unconventional experimental narratives out of inspired collective improvisation. Lady Firefly’s lush, painterly visuals work in perfect harmony with the dub-inspired soundscapes of Paul Amitai, as their live set often shifts through a variety of moods – from sparse, sun-dappled textures to thick sheets of distortion and deep, watery rhythmic pulses.

Lulacruza is a beautiful experience. Ale and Luis team up with Firefly Lab to create ethereal textures and moods carved from indigenous sounds and silence.
